China, Russia Pledge Closer Cooperation Ahead of BRICS Summit

The presidents of China and Russia are promising to work together to deepen their nations' strategic partnership.
Presidents Hu Jintao and Dmitri Medvedev met Wednesday on China's southern Hainan Island, the site of a summit beginning Thursday of the so-called BRICS group of leading developing nations. The other members of the group are Brazil, India and South Africa.
Following their bialteral meeting Wednesday, Mr. Hu said the two countries made progress last year toward developing a strategic partnership, and he looks forward to expanding that cooperation.
Mr. Medvedev, for his part, said he hopes to take the next steps in improving economic and political coordination between the two countries.
The BRICS countries have been meeting as a group since 2009. In Hainan, their leaders are expected to discuss ways they can cooperate to advance the interests of developing nations and challenge the developed countries' dominance of economic and political affairs.
