European Stocks Lower in Midday Trading

European stock prices are lower in midday trading Friday.

London's Financial Times index is down more than one-half of one percent. The CAC-40 in Paris is down one percent, and trading on the DAX index in Frankfurt is down just over one percent.

In New York, the S&P futures contract is down two points, indicating a lower opening.

Tokyo's Nikkei index lost 1.72 percent to close at 10,254.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index plunged more than one and one-half percent to finish the day's trading at 23,250.

Gold is trading at $1,408.73 an ounce.

The dollar is trading mixed against other major currencies.
