A large truck crashed into some
sidewalk shops outside Nga Bay town’s Hiep Thanh market in the southern
province of Hau Giang at 4:45 this morning, crushing six people to death
and severely injuring three others.
Eyewitnesses said prior to the incident when many shopkeepers were
making preparations for their early market day, the truck bearing number
plate 54S –6643 from Can Tho southern province crossed the newly-built
Phung Hiep Bridge and directly hit many people including small traders
at the foot of the bridge.
The three injured people were taken to the Can Tho General Hospital for treatment.
Ut Nhon, a shopkeeper, said he heard a scream as he was preparing to open his shop.
He went outside and saw some people lying dead and others injured.
He and some others rushed to the scene, he said.
None of the victims have been identified yet, Lieutenant Colonel Vo Thai Hong, the town’s police deputy chief, said.
The driver abandoned his truck and fled the scene but, according to newswire VnExpress, later turned himself in.
