China drill violated Vietnam sovereignty: FM spokeswoman

The military exercise carried out by the Chinese Navy’s South Sea Fleet on the Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago early this month seriously violated Vietnam’s sovereignty, the Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

The drill on February 3 went completely against a code of conduct agreed to by the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China to promote peace and stability in the region, the ministry spokeswoman Nguyen Phuong Nga said at a press briefing in Hanoi.

Vietnam requests China to put an end to similar actions in the future, and calls for relevant parties to strictly implement the ASEAN-China Declaration of the Conduct of Parties in order to maintain peace and stability in the East Sea, she said.
