She talked about the songwriter, his legacy and her live shows across Vietnam in an interview with Tuoi Tre.
Why do you start your tour in Hanoi, not Ho Chi Minh where you have lived and performed for decades?
Cam Van, a fellow singer from HCMC used to say when she went back to perform in Hanoi after 21 years away that, “All those years passed by but whenever the music dies down between every song, I can still feel up there on stage the warmth, expectation and affection for music in the audiences.”
I couldn’t agree more. Once Hanoians pay for the tickets, they come to the concerts with great appreciation for singers.
In my 30 years of singing, I have always wanted to start my tours in Hanoi.
You are most known for singing songs by Van Cao (another Vietnam’s prominent music composer), why Trinh Cong Son now?
I made a promise to Trinh Cong Son to perform his songs when he was still alive.
I first sang some of them back in 1995, but only managed to release an album recently and do this tour.
Although this is rather late in my singing career, more than 15 years of performance have helped me gain more insights into the profound meanings conveyed in his works. I will sing with all my passion, but whether I can live up to his fan’s expectations, we will have to wait.
How does it feel to sing Trinh’s songs?
His lyrics are always about love, love for life, love for people and forgiveness. Whenever I sing, it feels like I can forget all my sadness and fear to live better.
His music is close to life, simple and unpretentious. More than 600 songs he left behind is a significant resource for any singers to draw on and get inspiration from. But too much creativity can easily kill simplicity, the essence of his music.
Also, singing songs by such a renowned composer as Trinh Cong Son put a lot of pressure on me. Some even went as far as saying I am using his name to bolster my reputation. This is what has held me back for all these years.
Now I am confident enough to sing his songs with all my passion.
Trinh Cong Son, a Vietnamese composer, musician, painter and songwriter who died ten years ago in Ho Chi Minh, is widely considered one of the most salient figures of modern (non-classical) Vietnamese music.
